The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by Eng. Majid bin Mohammed Al-Mazyad, the Deputy Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission for the Communications Sector, chaired the Council Working Group on International Internet-related Public Policy Issues (CWG-Internet), which took place recently at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) headquarters in Geneva. The council was attended by Secretary-General of the ITU, Houlin Zhao and a large number of representatives of Member States.


The council began with an open consultation session with stakeholders of International Internet-related Policy, in order to utilize new and emerging technologies to achieve The Sustainable Development Goals, during which opportunities in international public policy were recognized, in areas such as; security, privacy, and data protection.


The council also emphasized the necessity of enabling affordable access to Internet, and encouraging investment in infrastructure.


During the council, H.E. Houlin Zhao stressed the importance of strengthening international action in these aspects to overcome the challenges faced by countries, as well as the Kingdom's efforts in digital transformation after it came within its priorities after it assumed presidency of the G20 in 2020.


The CWG-IN is limited to Member States, with open consultation to all stakeholders. This group was established as the Dedicated Group as an integral part of WG WSIS, open only to all member states. The working group is tasked with identifying, studying, and developing matters related to international Internet-related public policy issues.
