Move Towards Standardizing Smartphone and Electronic Device Chargers in the Saudi Market
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Commission and the Communications, Space and Technology Commission revealed a study on standardizing the charging standard for electronic devices in the Kingdom to the “USB-C” type, with the aim of improving the user experience without imposing additional costs, providing high-quality charging and data transfer technology, in addition to supporting environmental sustainability principles by reducing the volume of electronic waste.
The two commissions are working on a feasibility study for implementing the move to standardize chargers and its economic impact, alongside the social and environmental effects in the long term, through a number of stages the study will go through, the most important of which are analyzing market data and conducting a field survey, carrying out experimental tests of all types of electronic device chargers, and examining regulatory options with relevant entities, with an announcement to be made later on the study's conclusions and the expected timelines for beginning mandatory implementation in line with market readiness.
The two commissions explained that standardizing chargers will enable the use of a single type of charging cable for a range of electronic devices despite their different manufacturers, in addition to keeping pace with regional and global commercial markets and their developments given their direct impact on the e-commerce market in the Kingdom.
