Under the Patronage of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, the International Non-Terrestrial Networks Forum Begins in Riyadh with Participants from More Than 130 Countries
Under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Alswaha, the International Non-Terrestrial Networks Forum began today in Riyadh, with the attendance and participation of their Excellencies and a number of chief executives of major companies specializing in the field of non-terrestrial networks, in addition to a select group of global experts and researchers in technology and investment, as well as regulatory entities at the local and international levels from more than 130 countries.
His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, explained in his opening presentation that the purpose of organizing this forum is to build bridges and enhance cooperation to enable and adopt innovations that will contribute to developing and diversifying the economy; and help develop services expected to contribute to enabling the unconnected among the world's population to connect to the network, so that this becomes the standard and not a privilege granted to some without others, a mission we are committed to here in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and our partners around the world, through international coordination and cooperation, and partnership with international organizations, of which the partnership with the International Telecommunication Union is among the most prominent, to achieve this. His Excellency affirmed that non-terrestrial networks are effective in increasing coverage and connecting hard-to-reach areas, calling for expanding their use responsibly and sustainably to serve humanity, and to protect the planet from harmful space effects.
His Excellency described the technology market in the Kingdom as the largest and fastest-growing in the Middle East and Africa, affirming the importance of continuing to work to strengthen the Kingdom's standing in the field of the telecommunications, space and technology sector, by adopting and investing in future technologies, in addition to conducting trials to provide innovative solutions in the field, and driving development forward by adopting regulations to stimulate the sector to play its role to the fullest, having conducted the world's first trial to provide 5G network coverage via High-Altitude Platform Stations (5G HAPS), and the first trial in the Middle East and North Africa region using (5G backhauling) technology through low-earth-orbit satellites.
It is noted that this international forum is one of the pillars of the Non-Terrestrial Networks Program launched by the Commission, discussing through its specialized sessions many themes touching on the most notable services provided via non-terrestrial networks, and their regulatory and technical aspects, in addition to reviewing the technical trials recently conducted by the Commission in the field of non-terrestrial networks, and also reviewing the role of non-terrestrial networks in adopting sixth-generation (6G) telecommunications networks, in addition to their role in providing environmentally friendly and sustainable telecommunications networks, and also includes the Global Non-Terrestrial Networks Research Competition launched by the Commission in cooperation with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
