Kingdom Participates in the 2023 Session of the ITU Council
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia participated in the work of the 2023 session of the ITU Council, currently held in the Swiss capital Geneva, with a delegation headed by His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, and attended by the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Majed bin Khathailah. The 2023 Council session is the first for the member states elected at the Plenipotentiary Conference in late 2022, with the Council session continuing until 03 Muharram 1445H, corresponding to 21 July 2023.
The Kingdom's active and influential participation in the Union, the United Nations specialized agency for telecommunications and technology, comes as part of its objectives of supporting the Union and harnessing its specialized human capabilities and expertise in the fields of telecommunications and technology to support its activities, enhancing international cooperation to develop the telecommunications and technology sector, and working to help the Union's member states in general and developing countries in particular. These efforts have been crowned by the international community's confidence in the significant role played by the Kingdom in the Union, as the Kingdom has retained its membership on the ITU Council since 1965, and has been renominated in every election cycle since that date.
It is noted that the ITU Council comprises 48 elected countries, including the Kingdom, out of the Union's 193 member states, and the Council manages the Union's affairs during the periods between Plenipotentiary Conferences, and among its roles is considering telecommunications policy issues and ensuring that the Union's activities, policies and strategies are responsive to the rapidly changing telecommunications sector, in addition to managing the Union's work and programs and approving its budgets.
