Kingdom Participates in the 26th Session of the Arab Council of Ministers of Communications and Information Chaired by H.E. the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission
His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, headed the Kingdom's delegation participating in the work of the 26th session of the Arab Council of Ministers of Communications and Information. The Council held its 26th session meeting chaired by the Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dr. Amr Talaat, in Cairo.
In his address before the Council, His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission explained that 2022 represented a qualitative shift for the Kingdom on various fronts, noting that the Kingdom, stemming from its humanitarian role, worked to develop sustainable solutions to reduce the effects of the digital divide globally, through the world's first successful experience in providing fifth-generation (5G) telecommunications network services via High-Altitude Platform Stations (5G HAPS), and the Kingdom also conducted the first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communication trial in the Middle East and North Africa region, in addition to adopting future networks to provide innovative and effective global solutions for covering unconnected areas around the world.
He added that the Kingdom achieved first place in the Digital Government Leadership Index issued by the GSM Association (GSMA), and second place among G20 countries in the Digital Competitiveness Report issued by the European Center for Digital Competitiveness in 2022, and was classified at the highest level of the Regulatory Maturity Index issued by the International Telecommunication Union, in addition to achieving second place among G20 countries in spectrum liberalization.
Speaking on the environmental front, Al-Tamimi explained that the Kingdom has developed a sustainability strategy for the digital sector aimed at increasing reliance on renewable energy sources in the sector, from which numerous initiatives have emerged aimed at raising the rates of recycling and remanufacturing of electronic products and equipment, in line with the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
He concluded his speech by saying that the Kingdom looks forward to strengthening joint Arab cooperation, so that the present is prosperous and the future is bright, and that it will continue to make joint efforts to ensure the provision of distinguished services and innovative digital technologies that fulfill the aspirations of leaders and peoples.
It is noted that the Council is held annually with the aim of coordinating and unifying the efforts of the Council's member states to achieve close cooperation among Arab countries in developing and improving telecommunications and information technology facilities and services, in addition to working to secure the interests of Arab countries in international organizations, developing the telecommunications and information technology community, and developing technical means and scientific research in the region.
