Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, extended thanks and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and the Crown Prince and Minister of Defense His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud

, for the Council of Ministers' commendation of the progress achieved by the Kingdom in the global ranking of the digital telecommunications and information technology infrastructure index issued by the United Nations, with the Council considering this leap a culmination of the efforts of a number of government sectors.

Al-Tamimi considered this qualitative leap an embodiment of the support and care the sector receives from our wise government, and through the follow-up and supervision of His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology and Chairman of the Commission's Board of Directors, Engineer Abdullah bin Amer Al-Swaha, which has placed the sector in a leading position among communications and information technology sectors worldwide, noting in this context the major developmental leaps the sector has witnessed over the past (3) years.

Dr. Al-Tamimi noted that the Kingdom possesses an advanced and massive digital communications and information technology infrastructure at the level of Middle Eastern countries, which has contributed to the Kingdom's progress, with the population coverage rate for internet service in the Kingdom reaching 99%, and more than 3.5 million homes registered as covered by fiber optics, in addition to a 400% increase in internet speed over the past three years, and achieving tenth place among the world's countries according to the global Speedtest report.

The United Nations had previously announced the Kingdom's advancement of 40 places in the Telecommunications Infrastructure Index (TII) within the E-Government Development Index, as a result of the Commission's launch of a package of specialized projects and initiatives that contributed to developing digital infrastructure, enhancing competition, and stimulating investment, including increasing the opening of broadband for fiber-optic services among infrastructure-owning telecommunications companies, placing the Kingdom among the world's earliest countries in this regard, enabling 5G technologies in the Kingdom, and the Kingdom achieving second place among G20 countries in total allocation of globally designated frequency bands for providing mobile telecommunications services.
