Governor of the Communications Commission Participates in the Opening of the WSIS Forum 2022

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, participated in the opening of the WSIS Forum, held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme "Information and Communication Technologies for Wellbeing, Inclusion and Resilience," in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Al-Wasel, the Kingdom's Permanent Representative in Geneva. The Kingdom's participation aims to strengthen its international standing in the field of communications and information technology, in addition to highlighting its efforts and achievements on the topics discussed during the forum's proceedings, as the Kingdom is a strategic partner in achieving the objectives of the World Summit on the Information Society and related Sustainable Development Goals, and a key player in promoting a culture of excellence and creativity in everything related to the communications and information technology sector at the international level.

His Excellency noted in his address delivered at the opening ceremony of the forum's proceedings the importance of sustainability for the communications and information technology sector and the growing need for it amid the rapid challenges the world is witnessing, noting that this interest has been embodied in the launch of many programs and projects through Saudi Vision 2030, which has made sustainability one of its main pillars for advancing the future, as the Kingdom has launched a number of smart and sustainable city and community projects, such as "THE LINE" city project and "OXAGON" city project, which will operate on 100% renewable energy and adopt modern technologies such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, robotics, and harnessing data to enhance the infrastructure capabilities of these cities.

He affirmed the importance of having secure digital infrastructure characterized by flexibility, resilience, and innovation, to contribute to achieving development goals, as the Kingdom conducted the world's first successful trial of providing 5G services for communications networks via High Altitude Platform Stations (5G HAPS), in addition to launching the latest generation of Wi-Fi technology, WiFi-6E, making the Kingdom the first globally in terms of total frequency spectrum available for Wi-Fi technology. The Kingdom is also seeking to adopt future networks based on interconnected terrestrial and space technologies and components to provide innovative and effective solutions for covering remote areas throughout the Kingdom, having conducted the first "LEO Satellite" communication trial at the level of the Middle East and North Africa.

It is noted that the WSIS Forum is organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), with the forum featuring high-level interactive dialogues and workshops on numerous topics to review the latest developments and exchange expertise among various stakeholders.
