The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Participates in the 150th Anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia participated in the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union, held yesterday, Sunday, May 17, 2015, in the city of Geneva. On this occasion, the International Telecommunication Union dedicated a special address to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, delivered on behalf of His Excellency the Minister of Communications and Information Technology by His Excellency Engineer Habib bin Khudhair Al-Shangeeti, Acting Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, in which he noted the Kingdom's interest in the Union; it is one of the supporters of its system, and since becoming a member of the International Telecommunication Union in 1949, and a member of its Council since 1965, it has never failed to fulfill this membership and carry out its duties, and has also dedicated its resources and expertise to supporting the Union's work.

The Acting Governor noted that the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union represents a major milestone in its history, and a starting point toward new horizons for it to continue carrying out its leading role in the communications and information technology sector and its regulation worldwide, and in keeping pace with developments and changes in the communications and information technology environment.

As of yesterday, May 17, 2015, 150 years will have passed since the founding of the International Telecommunication Union, as the first international telegraph convention was concluded in 1865. At this celebration, the Union's successful efforts in developing the communications and information technology sector and achieving global access to it were reviewed, which have had a major impact on strengthening peace and economic prosperity.

The International Telecommunication Union is the oldest intergovernmental organization, and a specialized agency for communications and information technology affiliated with the United Nations, having become one of the United Nations' specialized agencies since 1947.
