Saudi Arabia Advances 18 Places in Global Internet Speed Rankings Within Two Months

The SpeedTest report on internet speed measurement confirmed that average mobile internet download speeds in the Kingdom achieved growth of about 80%, reaching 16.2Mbps instead of 9Mbps, advancing (18) places in the global ranking over the past two months, while fixed internet download speeds in the Kingdom achieved growth of 37%, with the average speed reaching 21.3Mbps instead of 15.5Mbps, advancing (10) places in the global ranking, based on actual speed measurement reports derived from tests conducted by internet service users.

The Communications and Information Technology Commission said in a statement today that this improvement in speeds is due to the reforms carried out during 2017, and that these reports confirm that the communications sector is moving according to an accelerated plan to improve internet service speeds, in light of corrective measures that included making more frequencies available, and encouraging the deployment of broadband through fiber-optic networks and 4G networks, in addition to requiring communications service providers to be transparent and clear in applying the fair use policy, and preventing non-compliant practices, including the imposition of unfair usage restrictions.

In a related context, the Commission explained that it operates within a system led by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology that seeks to develop and advance the sector, noting that there are a number of initiatives that will contribute to the continued development of services, and expressing its thanks to communications service providers for their efforts in improving services, noting that this is a small part of our ambition for further achievements, as the nation deserves more.
