Represented by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission.. The Kingdom Chairs the Twenty-Sixth Session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD)
The Kingdom chaired the twenty-sixth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), affiliated with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), represented by Engineer Mansour Al-Qurashi, Director General of International Affairs at the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, with the aim of following up on the Commission's work and directing it to serve the Kingdom's interests, enhancing its presence and standing, and highlighting its efforts and achievements internationally, in addition to cooperating with the international community to develop the communications and technology sector.
The session's proceedings saw the participation of a number of officials from the private sector, civil society, academic institutions, and international and regional organizations, where participants discussed several topics, most notably harnessing science, technology and innovation for environmental and societal development, charting future directions, ensuring coordination and planning among the Commission's various activities to achieve relevant United Nations goals, as well as reviewing progress made in implementing the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society and following up on them at the regional and international levels.
The Kingdom's participation in and chairing of the Commission's work comes as a result of its leading expertise in the field and its active contributions to strengthening the digital infrastructure of developing countries by making its resources available to the international community, in addition to its leadership in the communications and technology sector at the regional level and in the field of digital regulatory readiness. It is worth noting that the Commission — which has 43 member states — was established in 1992 with the aim of providing advice to the United Nations General Assembly as well as the Economic and Social Council on matters related to science and technology and their impact on development, and advancing related policies in developing countries, as well as drafting recommendations and guidelines on this matter within the United Nations system, alongside its responsibility for the periodic follow-up on the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society.
