20250519510The Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST), in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), has announced the release of the “Global Toolkit for Policy and Regulation Practices for E-waste Management”. The toolkit aims to support the developing countries’ government entities in formulating national policies and legislation for e-waste management, in line with international best practices. This launch coincides with Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR25).
The toolkit provides comprehensive, practical steps based on real experiences from countries including Zambia, Rwanda, and Paraguay, to enable policymakers and regulators to design and implement effective national legislation that supports the transition to a circular economy. It also emphasizes key areas such as inclusivity, sustainable financing mechanisms, and compliance, linking policy formulation to business models.
Targeting government entities regulating the ICT sector specializing in environmental sustainability, the toolkit is especially relevant for countries without e- waste policies or those in the process of developing them. It provides flexible, integrated tools to address key challenges in the field.
The toolkit is part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to lead international initiatives toward achieving the SDGs. It stems from the “Developing E-Waste Management Regulations” initiative, launched by CST in collaboration with the ITU during the 2023 Global Symposium for Regulators. The initiative provides the foundation for shaping global standards and regulations to reduce e-waste worldwide.
