His Excellency Al-Tamimi at Abu Dhabi Space Debate: International Cooperation and Private Sector Partnership Key Features of the Coming Period
His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, participated in the main session of the "Abu Dhabi Space Debate," held on December 5-6, 2022, and organized by the UAE Space Agency, under the patronage of the President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The event aims to formulate new international regulations in the space sector and lead a global dialogue on the most important challenges facing this sector.
During the session, His Excellency explained that, based on standard studies in the space sector, the coming few years will see the entry of private sector investments, due to several factors, most notably the decreasing costs of launch and access to Earth orbit as a preparatory stage for reaching the Moon and deep space in the future. He noted that one of the sector's most prominent features in the coming period is international cooperation in space missions and partnership with the private sector to implement this. Al-Tamimi pointed out that the "Artemis" Accords reflect the shift from competition to international cooperation, having so far brought together 21 countries from around the world, including the Kingdom, in a massive program to return to the Moon and go to Mars.
His Excellency Al-Tamimi highlighted the Kingdom's efforts to double the sector's contribution by stimulating entrepreneurs, creating job opportunities, and benefiting from the opportunities offered by space applications and sciences, noting that the Kingdom has launched accelerator programs to fund new space projects and support entrepreneurship through a specialized center, and is preparing to launch funding programs for entrepreneurs in space applications and data analysis, in addition to working closely with academic circles to accelerate research, development, and innovation.
Al-Tamimi also noted that the Kingdom considers the space sector a pillar in preserving the planet, and an enabling factor for the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, through its keenness to benefit from it and work with the international community to address current challenges.
