First of its kind to regulate services in the Kingdom CITC Launches the Local Bulk "SMS" Management System Using Blockchain Technology

The Communication and Information Technology Commission (CITC) launches the "SMS" senders’ name management system using Blockchain technology on the sidelines of the Digital Technology Forum 2022, which is the first of its kind in regulating services and sectors in the Kingdom's, to provide innovative services and features to the users, as well as to govern and regulate its market, increase protection and credibility, and control the senders' names registration to avoid duplication.

The Commission explained that the system was developed by a pioneering initiative in collaboration with service providers, and it connects databases among operators using Blockchain technology, and updates the status of senders’ name instantly in Telecom companies, while operating within the domain of local bulk SMS.

CITC pointed out that the system allows the registration of senders’ names according to its governance practice, where the service provider submits a registration request to be processed.

The bulk SMS market exports more than 35 Billion messages annually through more than 34 thousand active senders’ names, with 25 licensed service providers, and more than 20 thousand beneficiaries of the SMS service.

The system will improve SMS reliability, standardize the criteria to obtain the service, as well as register, restrict, document the senders' names to avoid duplication. In addition to accelerating and automating the registration request process, and updating the status of senders’ names at telecom companies without having to repeat the registration process.
