During his delivery of the Kingdom's address at the opening of the World Summit on the Information Society forum, His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission: Our sectors will lead sustainable development pathways through data-driven cooperation
His Excellency the Governor of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, affirmed that the communications, space, and technology sector plays an important and pivotal role in enhancing and advancing sustainable development pathways, through a "data-driven cooperation approach," adding that data is knowledge, and knowledge is power, as it helps us understand the changes our world is witnessing and determine the actions we must take to steer those changes in the right direction.
This came during His Excellency's delivery of the Kingdom's address at the opening of the World Summit on the Information Society forum "WSIS 2023," attended by the Kingdom's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Abdulmohsen bin Khothaila, held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the title "The Summit's lines of action to build back better and accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals."
His Excellency noted that harnessing the latent capabilities of data requires ensuring its availability to everyone, and guaranteeing the provision of communications services to every individual, thereby granting them access to data, information, and knowledge that improves their livelihood and benefits them and the planet, as the Kingdom has worked to adopt non-terrestrial networks to cover current gaps in terrestrial networks and provide inclusive communications services, and held six trials of non-terrestrial networks last year, including conducting the first 5G network testing trial using high-altitude platform station systems.
His Excellency concluded his remarks by noting what these efforts and directions reflect, as outlined by the sustainability strategy launched by the Commission last year and its alignment with the broader roadmap represented by the Saudi Green Initiative and Middle East Green Initiative, which combine environmental protection, digital transformation, and innovation-based sustainability, leading us to a green future, affirming that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is not an individual task but a joint global collective effort, while regulations remain the fundamental pillar for international cooperation and sound governance under the umbrella of the International Telecommunication Union, setting the rules of the game and creating trust by establishing foundations that protect our steps and guide us on the right path.
