Communications, Space and Technology Commission launches the second phase of the "Recycle Your Device" initiative
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission today launched the second phase of the device recycling initiative "Dawwir Jihazak" (Recycle Your Device), targeting individuals, which aims to achieve environmental sustainability, reduce emissions and electronic waste, and reduce financial waste through device recycling, in addition to enhancing social responsibility and the principles of solidarity to enable needy families to obtain technical services through this initiative, which will continue until the end of January 2023.
The Commission explained that it has dedicated a website that explains the mechanism for handing over devices, and the types of devices it targets, including landline phones, mobile phones, tablets, modems, printers, and desktop and laptop computers, noting that recycling includes two tracks: the first track concerns computers, for destruction and donation of the proceeds from the raw materials resulting from them, or repairing them and donating them to needy families, while confirming that all their data will be wiped in a way that does not allow any possibility of data recovery or use. The second track concerns other devices, which will be destroyed through dedicated means and converted into raw materials, with the proceeds donated to needy families, affirming its commitment to protecting users and preserving the privacy of their data.
It is worth noting that the Communications, Space and Technology Commission launched the first phase, targeting the business sector, on September 19, 2022, to continue until the end of January 2023, in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN), and the private sector, with the number of donated devices reaching more than 36,000 devices so far, worth approximately one million Saudi riyals, as a step to reduce waste resulting from devices, and contribute to reducing future costs of raw materials, preserving the Kingdom's natural resources, and achieving sustainability according to the principle of a circular economy, continuing the Commission's efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and raise the social responsibility of device users, and out of its belief in its effective role in achieving the Kingdom's goals for a sustainable digital future.
