Communications, Space and Technology Commission issues "Meqyas" report for the fourth quarter of 2022 on internet speed and digital content access speed indicators in the Kingdom
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission issued the "Meqyas" report for the fourth quarter of 2022 on internet speed and digital content access speed indicators in the Kingdom, which aims to enhance competitiveness to provide the best services to users, raise the level of transparency in the sector, and attract investors.
The report compares, according to fourth quarter 2022 indicators, average download and upload speeds and latency among service providers, and also includes indicators for the deployment and performance of 5G networks, and determines access time to the most used social media applications and video conferencing applications in the Kingdom.
The report revealed that the average mobile internet download speed in the Kingdom reached 180.21 Mbps, an improvement rate estimated at 6.31% compared to the same period last year, while the average mobile internet upload speed reached 22.80 Mbps. The report also reviewed fixed internet indicators in the Kingdom with an average download speed of 114.29 Mbps, an improvement rate estimated at 9.69% compared to the same period last year, and an average upload speed reaching 48.78 Mbps.
The Commission also noted in the "Meqyas" report that Saudi Telecom Company (stc) topped the list of telecommunications service providers in average mobile internet download speed, recording an average speed of 199.03 Mbps, achieving an improvement rate of up to 12.52% compared to the same period last year. Zain topped the list of telecommunications service providers in fixed internet download speed with an average of 130.18 Mbps. The report also included a list of telecommunications service providers' performance in mobile internet download speed at the regional level within the Kingdom, led by Saudi Telecom Company (stc) in 11 regions across the Kingdom.
On the front of 5G network deployment, the "Meqyas" report showed that the number of governorates covered by 5G services reached 95 governorates across the Kingdom, with an average 5G mobile speed reaching 344.41 Mbps.
The report reviewed the ranking of service providers in terms of access time to the most used social media applications in the Kingdom (Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook), showing an improvement in access speed to social media applications in the Kingdom of up to 39% compared to the same period last year, with Mobily recording the fastest access time for Snapchat and Twitter, while Saudi Telecom Company (stc) and Zain shared the lead in access speed for Instagram and Facebook. The report also revealed access time to the most used video conferencing applications in the Kingdom, with Saudi Telecom Company (stc) leading in access speed to Webex and Zoom, while Mobily led in Microsoft Teams, and Salam led in Google Meet, and the report showed an improvement in access speed to video communication applications in the Kingdom of up to 65% compared to the same period last year.
The report also tracked service providers' performance in access speed to the most prominent content hosting regions, with Zain leading in access speed to content hosted in Germany, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and the Netherlands, while Saudi Telecom Company (stc) led in access speed to France and the eastern and western United States.
It is noted that the "Meqyas" report, issued periodically by the Commission, contributes to raising the level of service quality, and gives users the opportunity to improve their experiences by choosing service providers according to the indicator results, in addition to enabling investors and interested parties to view market performance indicators in the Kingdom. The report also included a list of telecommunications service providers' performance in mobile internet download speed at the regional level within the Kingdom, led by Saudi Telecom Company (stc) in 11 regions across the Kingdom.
