Communications, Space and Technology Commission issues performance report on telecom providers for the most popular video games during the third quarter of 2022
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission issued the third quarter 2022 report of the "Game Mode" initiative, which compares the performance quality of telecommunications service providers in the Kingdom for the most popular video games, and also reviews the most popular games among the gaming community, and provides a set of recommended guidelines for improving internet connection quality for video games, as this report is the eighth edition of a series of reports issued since the initiative's launch at the beginning of 2021.
The third quarterly report of 2022, in its current edition, revealed an improvement in video gaming performance in the Kingdom of up to 33% compared to the third quarter of last year, 2021. The report also included download speed results for video games across gaming platforms in the Kingdom, showing that the Xbox platform led in download speed percentage for video games across gaming platforms in the Kingdom, compared to users' package speeds, reaching 92%, followed by the PlayStation platform at 86%, and the Steam platform third at 84%. Mobily topped the list of operators in download speed percentage for video games via Xbox platforms at 105%, Steam at 100%, and PlayStation at 90%.
The report showed that Saudi Telecom Company topped the list of service providers with the best latency rate in 4 games, while Mobily led in two games, and Mobily and Saudi Telecom Company shared the lead in 7 games.
The game Apex Legends achieved the highest improvement rate in latency, at 33% compared to the same period the previous year, 2021, followed by FIFA at 29%, and then Fortnite with an improvement rate of 26%. The quarterly report also showed Zain maintaining the lead, recording the best result (zero milliseconds) in the rate of latency impact when using the internet while gaming over the network, followed by Saudi Telecom Company with a recorded 3 milliseconds, then Mobily with 5 milliseconds, an improvement rate of 97% compared to the previous quarter.
The quarterly report showed the average latency rate for fixed internet in the Kingdom at 23 milliseconds, with Salam leading service providers in it, recording 11 milliseconds. It also revealed that the average latency rate for mobile internet networks in the Kingdom reached 34 milliseconds, with Mobily leading its peers at 30 milliseconds, in addition to the average latency for 5G mobile networks in the Kingdom reaching a rate of 27 milliseconds, with Mobily leading service providers at a rate of 22 milliseconds.
At the regional level within the Kingdom, the report showed Mobily leading service providers in average mobile internet network latency in the Eastern, Hail, Qassim, Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, Makkah, Madinah, and Tabuk regions, while Saudi Telecom Company led service providers in the Al-Jouf region, and shared the lead with Mobily in the Najran and Northern Borders regions, while Zain led the index in the Riyadh region.
The #GameMode initiative provides a set of guidelines for improving internet connection quality for video games and ways to ensure the safety of the home network and the efficiency of the network devices used, and also allows them to contribute to achieving the initiative's goals by registering to obtain the "Fixed Internet Meter" device, which will enable the user to know the performance of the internet service provided to them, including the performance of the most popular applications and video games.
It is worth noting that the "Game Mode" initiative comes within the framework of the Communications, Space and Technology Commission's work to enhance competitiveness among telecommunications service providers to provide the best experience for gamers, and raise the level of transparency in the market by publishing data results and indicators, and enabling investors and interested parties to view market performance indicators in the Kingdom.
