Communications, Space and Technology Commission approves the provision of connected vehicle service to 12 companies serving 26 brands
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission, in cooperation with the General Authority of Transport and the National Technology Development Committee, issued its approval to 12 companies, serving 26 brands, to provide "connected vehicle" service, as part of the Commission's regulatory role in the information technology and emerging technologies sector, and its pursuit of stimulating and enhancing investment in this type of technology in the Kingdom, and working to maximize the benefit from communications and technology services, to contribute to the Kingdom's presence among the leading countries in using and developing technology to improve quality of life and achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
The Commission explained that the companies that obtained approval and their affiliated brands are: Lucid Limited for the "Lucid" brand; General Motors for three brands, "Chevrolet," "GMC," and "Cadillac"; Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Company for three brands, "BMW," "MINI Cooper," and "Rolls-Royce"; Al Zahid Tractor and Heavy Machinery Company for the "Caterpillar" brand; Al Araba Al Fakhira Company for the "golf carts" brand; Petromin Company for eight brands, "Alfa Romeo," "Abarth," "Fiat," "Fiat Professional," "Dodge," "Chrysler," "RAM," and "Jeep"; Al Majdouie Motors Company for the "Peugeot" brand; Universal Motors Agencies for the "Maserati" brand; Ford Saudi Arabia for the "Ford" and "Lincoln" brands; Abdullah Hashim Limited for the "Honda" brand; Nissan Saudi Arabia Limited for the "Nissan" and "Infiniti" brands; and Abdul Latif Jameel for the "Toyota" and "Lexus" brands.
"Connected vehicle" service is one of the Internet of Things applications that link the vehicle to advanced systems providing a number of services that will raise the level of safety for the user, such as the service of generating diagnostic reports on the vehicle's performance, which helps the manufacturer and owner in many decisions related to vehicle maintenance and performance improvement, and requesting direct assistance and technical support, in addition to a range of entertainment options and services, which will result in an improved user experience.
It is worth noting that these approvals come as an extension of the Commission's role in regulating the Internet of Things and emerging technologies through the adoption and publication of the IoT regulatory framework, licensing the provision of IoT virtual network operator (IoT-VNO) services, and contributing to the spread of IoT communication technologies such as NB-IoT technology, in addition to introducing a license for providing IoT services using license-exempt frequencies, as well as partnering with the General Authority of Transport, which regulates land, sea, and rail transport modes and supports the adoption of IoT technologies and modern technologies in transport modes and their supporting services, which enhances the spread of smart transport within the Kingdom's cities.
