CST Enables Carbon-Neutral Telecom Towers with Zain and Huawei

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) has enabled the deployment of carbon-neutral EcoFusion telecom towers in Saudi Arabia, paving the way for Zain KSA to launch its first site powered by 5G-Advanced technology in partnership with Huawei during LEAP26, aiming to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions across the ICT sectors, and promote investment in sustainable networks, by reducing 40% of carbon emissions compared to traditional towers.

The launch ceremony was at “LEAP26” in the presence of CST’s Deputy Governor for Strategy and Digitalization, Mr. Naif Sheshah, along with Zain KSA CEO, Eng. Saad bin Abdulrahman AlSadhan, and Mr. Ian Qi, the Deputy CEO and Managing Director of the Carrier Business at Huawei KSA.

The tower integrates renewable energy technologies with advanced energy management and efficiency solutions, contributing to a 33.1% decrease in energy consumption, in addition to a further 8% reduction through the use of renewable energy sources, while leveraging innovative solutions enabled by the Kingdom’s advanced digital infrastructure.

The initiative is part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between CST and Huawei during LEAP24, aiming to collaborate efforts in finding innovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions in the Kingdom’s communications and technology sectors, hence achieving digital sustainability and promoting circular economy practices.
