Communications Commission: We did not mandate fair use, and the decision prohibits violating practices through transparency and clarity

With reference to what has been circulating in some media outlets regarding the Communications and Information Technology Commission mandating a fair use policy for telecommunications service providers, the Commission's official spokesperson, Adel Abuhaimed, explained that the Commission had cancelled the fair use policy several months ago because it was being presented by some service providers in a manner that did not meet clarity and transparency standards. Abuhaimed pointed to the Commission's decision regulating the fair use policy, which required service providers to set a minimum threshold should the service provider wish to apply the policy to current or future packages, adding that a service provider's failure to clarify this policy for packages that include it means it is unrestricted and the policy will not be applied to them.

Abuhaimed confirmed that the Commission's decision enabled the user to choose the appropriate service provider by transferring their number to the suitable service provider or choosing the package appropriate to their use and needs, whether packages subject to the fair use policy or not. He added that the Commission is keen on protecting users, having recently issued decisions requiring service providers to be transparent and clear in marketing packages and offers, and updated the terms of service document, which includes provisions to protect users and clarify their rights.
