Communications and Information Technology Commission organizes workshop on the role of the academic sector in deploying IPv6

The activities of the specialized workshop on "the role of the academic sector in deploying Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6)" launch tomorrow, Thursday, at the headquarters of the Communications and Information Technology Commission in Riyadh, with the participation of a number of specialists from the academic and private sectors in the Kingdom, including computer science and information technology colleges at Saudi universities, as well as Juniper, Huawei, and Cisco, which will present a number of initiatives for services they will provide to the academic sector to help support and spread IPv6 in the Kingdom.

The Commission explained that the workshop will address a number of themes, most importantly the current status of IPv6 in the Kingdom, the importance of activating the role of the academic sector in promoting and supporting its spread, as well as the importance of building partnerships and communication between academic entities, service providers, and global companies manufacturing networking technologies and software, in order to build skills and expertise that serve students, educational institutions, and the job market in this field alike.

The Commission said that organizing this specialized workshop reflects its awareness of the importance of transitioning to IPv6, and keeping pace with the developments reached by the communications and information technology sector; particularly the rapid increase in the global spread of the internet, the spread of broadband services, their speeds and technologies, as well as the increasing reliance on the internet to connect various devices; and the true revolution the world is witnessing in applications, services, and equipment, especially in the field of smartphones, government and public services, and social networking sites. All these developments require more IP numbers, which cannot be provided through IPv4, due to the depletion of IPv4 addresses at the regional internet number registries, the bodies that oversee the distribution of internet addresses around the world.
