"The Communications and Information Technology Commission" Issues Its Report on Telecom Service Providers' Performance for the Most Popular Video Games During the Second Quarter of 2022

initiative, which compares the quality of performance of telecommunications service providers in the Kingdom for the most popular video games, reviews the most popular games among the gaming community, and provides a set of recommended guidelines for improving internet connection quality for video games,

this report being the seventh in a series of reports issued since the initiative was launched at the beginning of 2021.

The

Second Quarter 2022 report

in its current edition revealed an improvement in video game performance in the Kingdom of up to 41% compared to the second quarter of last year, 2021. The report also included the addition of latency indicators for three new games, in addition to introducing a new indicator to measure download speed performance for video games across gaming platforms in the Kingdom. The report showed that the XBOX platform led in download speed rate for video games across gaming platforms in the Kingdom, compared to users' package speeds, reaching 87.9%, followed by the PlayStation platform at 82.5%, and the STEAM platform third at 76.5%. "Saudi Telecom Company" topped the list of operators in download speed rate for video games via the PlayStation platform at 85.9%, while "Mobily" took the lead on the XBOX platform at 93.8% and on STEAM at 87.8%.

The latest edition of the report also revealed the addition of latency indicators for three new games — PUBG Mobile, Rainbow Six Siege, and Rocket League. The report showed that "Saudi Telecom Company" topped the list of service providers in average latency for League of Legends, Dota 2, PUBG Mobile, World of Warcraft, Rainbow Six Siege, and Rocket League, while "Mobily" led in PUBG and Among Us. Fortnite recorded the highest improvement rate in latency, reaching 41% compared to the same period the previous year, 2021, followed by Apex Legends at 38%, and then FIFA with an improvement rate of 36%.

The quarterly report showed that the average latency for fixed internet in the Kingdom reached 21 milliseconds, with "Salam" leading service providers by recording 11 milliseconds. It also revealed that the average latency for mobile internet networks in the Kingdom reached 34 milliseconds, with "Mobily" leading its peers by recording 29 milliseconds, in addition to the average latency for mobile 5G networks in the Kingdom reaching 27 milliseconds, with "Mobily" leading service providers with an average of 22 milliseconds.

At the level of the Kingdom's regions, the report showed that "Mobily" led service providers in mobile internet network latency in the regions of Hail, the Eastern Province, Al-Qassim, Madinah, Tabuk, Jazan, Makkah, and Al-Baha, while "Saudi Telecom Company" led service providers in the Northern Borders and Al-Jouf regions, and "Zain" led in the Riyadh and Aseer regions.

The #GameMode initiative provides a set of guidelines for improving internet connection quality for video games and ways to verify the safety of the home network and the efficiency of the network equipment used. It also allows users to contribute to the initiative by registering to obtain a "fixed internet meter" device, which will enable the user to know the performance of the internet service provided to them, including the performance of the most popular applications and video games.

It is worth noting that the "Game Mode" initiative comes within the framework of the Communications and Information Technology Commission's work to enhance competitiveness among telecommunications service providers to deliver the best experience for gamers, raise the level of market transparency by publishing data and indicator results, and enable investors and interested parties to review market performance indicators in the Kingdom.
