Commission: Data Consumption Jumps by 33% ... and 'YouTube' the Most Data-Consuming Application

The Communications and Information Technology Commission revealed telecom service indicators showing an increase in the use of mobile and fixed internet in the Kingdom following the application of precautionary measures in the Kingdom to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus, with the daily data consumption rate on mobile and fixed internet networks in the Kingdom rising by 33% compared to the average for last February.

The indicators for the top five data-consuming applications showed that the "YouTube" platform tops the list of content platforms consuming the most data, at an estimated 22.5% of total daily data consumption in the Kingdom, followed by the "Facebook" platform at 8.1%, with "PlayStation" coming in third place at 7.8%, while the "Snapchat" platform ranked fourth with the equivalent of 7.6% of total data consumption, and the "Netflix" platform came in fifth place among the most data-consuming applications at 6.2%.

It is noted that this increase in data consumption comes as a result of accommodating the growing demand for internet services in the Kingdom during this period, which is witnessing the application of many precautionary measures, foremost among them remote work, remote learning, and conducting all business in the private and public sectors through electronic services.
