As an Extension of the Local Roaming Initiative, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission Launches High-Speed Internet Service in the Kingdom's Villages and Hamlets

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission announced the launch of a high-speed internet service, as an extension of the local roaming service initiative, which covers 21,000 villages and hamlets across the Kingdom's various regions, to ensure the continuity of communications services for more than 5 million people.

The Commission explained that the service enables users to benefit from the communications network covering the area regardless of the service provider, and supports service providers in reaching the largest possible number of users, ensuring an increase in the number of available options, raising the level of competition, improving service quality, and enhancing the user experience on one hand, and supporting digital transformation enablement in the Kingdom's villages and hamlets on the other.

The Commission indicated that the launch of high-speed internet within the local roaming service will enable users to switch their network to another service provider if the primary service provider's coverage is unavailable, without any additional fees on the user, and it covers all voice services, high-speed internet services, and short text messages.

The Commission noted that the local roaming initiative has achieved multiple accomplishments, as the average daily number of text messages exceeded 25,000 messages, and the average daily number of voice calls exceeded 340,000 calls, while the average daily volume of data consumption reached 7 terabytes, and the average daily number of roamers reached more than 236,000 roamers between local networks.

It is worth noting that the Commission launched the sixth and final phase of the local roaming project across the Kingdom's various regions in December 2021, following the signing of commercial agreements between Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Etihad Etisalat Company (Mobily), and Saudi Mobile Telecommunications Company (Zain).
