The Kingdom Participates in the Meeting of the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development

His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi, Governor of the Communications and Information Technology Commission, participated in the meeting of the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, held virtually on Friday, 18 September 2020, with the participation of communications and information technology leaders from various government and private sectors around the world.

The Commission works to launch activities and initiatives concerned with the use of broadband, as an enabling tool for building the future of communities and developing them in the economic and social fields with which it is concerned.

His Excellency the Governor noted the renaissance being witnessed by the communications and information technology sector in the Kingdom, and the Kingdom's efforts during its presidency of the G20 to make the digital world's opportunities available to users everywhere, and its leadership of international files related to bridging the digital divide, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and harnessing technology to confront the coronavirus pandemic.

During the Commission's work, its members discussed a wide range of important issues, from digital health and digital education, to protecting children while using the internet, in addition to entrepreneurship.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's participation in the work of the UN Broadband Commission comes out of its belief in the Commission's efforts to narrow the digital divide between countries and provide communications and information technology services for all, to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the economic and social welfare of peoples.

It is worth noting that the Kingdom is an active member of the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which is one of the committees affiliated with the United Nations, launched ten years ago, following the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Commission's vision is to harness communications and information technology to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and to encourage countries to adopt national broadband policies to enhance digital transformation and develop the digital economy globally.
