CST Showcases the First of its Kind Technicall Trial across MENA in Non-Terrestrial Networks

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) unveiled a pioneering technical trial in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, focused on non-terrestrial networks. The initiative involves connecting smart devices compatible with 3GPP Release 17 standards to satellites, enabling data transmission and reception in unconnected areas. This announcement was made during the Connecting the World from the Skies Global Forum 2024.

CST highlighted that the initiative aims to link unconnected areas, advance non-terrestrial network technologies, attract global investments, and stimulate local investments in the sector.

CST also showcased several innovative technical trials during the forum, including, the “Global Connectivity Through LEO Networks” trial, which utilizes broadband LEO satellite networks to enable direct and rapid connectivity in unconnected areas; as well as the “Advancing IoT Connectivity from the Sky” trial, which focuses on IoT technologies to efficiently collect and transmit data via satellites, supporting various business models in critical sectors. Moreover, the “Driving Industrial Efficiency through Multi-Orbit Satellite Communications” trial, which explores the potential of non-terrestrial network technologies to connect industrial sectors in unconnected areas; and finally, the “Pushing The Boundaries of Low-Altitude Platforms” trial, which presents innovative solutions to enhance non-terrestrial network coverage, enabling the restoration of connectivity during emergencies and natural disasters.

Notably, CST introduced six pioneering technical trials during the first edition of the forum in 2022. These initiatives highlight Saudi Arabia's dedication to utilizing its technical expertise to benefit humanity and drive global advancement.
